SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has announced the launch of 12th edition of steelChallenge-the biggest industry competition.

The steelChallenge-12 competition will be held in two categories-Student and Industry. Individuals, who are enrolled in studies at an accredited academic institution, either full-time or part-time, at the time of registration period, are eligible to participate in Student category. Individuals, working in steel companies or steel industry supply chain having less than five years of experience, shall register under ‘Industry’ category. Students who work in a steel company are also eligible to take part in the challenge under ‘Parent’ category.

The competition, which will take place in two rounds, will be held in four regions- North & South America; Europe, CIS, Middle East & Africa; Asia and Oceania excluding China; and China. In the first round, winners will be selected from the above four regions. One student and industry person each will be selected from each region. In addition, the student and industry person with the next best result worldwide will also qualify for the World Championship. There is no team participation. Moreover, regional or world level winners from previous steelChallenge competitions will not be allowed to participate in steelChallenge-12.

Each competitor is required to register once for steelChallenge-12 on the steeluniversity website at http://steeluniversity.org. There is no registration fee for participants in student category. Industry participants are required to pay €24.99 plus applicable VAT, which will not be refunded.

The Regional Championships will be held online on 29th November, 2017. The online competition will be open for a period of 24 hours, during which the competitors are allowed to undertake unlimited runs of steelmaking simulation to produce low cost steel, out of which at least three runs must be successful. The results of the Regional Competition will be announced on 6th December, 2017. The tentative date for second round, the World Championship to be held in Mumbai is fixed as 10th April, 2018. The date is subject to change, worldsteel noted.

The Finalists of World Championship from student and industry categories will get a prize of €500, travel allowance of up to €1,500, iPad tablet after use and certificate. In addition, the qualified participants to the World Championship from student category will be provided up to €1,500 in travel allowance for their faculty advisor to join them. The World Champions will receive €500, World Champion certificate and steelChallenge-12 trophy.
