U.S. Weekly Raw Steel Output Witnessed Notable Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly domestic raw steel production data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests notable jump during the week ended May 1, 2021. The weekly production climbed higher significantly by 44.4% over the previous year.

The raw steel output by the U.S. mills totalled 1.788 million net tons (NT) at a capability utilization rate of 78.7%. It must be noted that the production had totalled only 1.238 million NT at a capacity utilization rate of 55.2% during the same period a year before. Meantime, the production during the week was up marginally by 0.4% when compared with the production of 1.781 million NT during the prior week.

The year-to-date raw steel production totalled 30.315 million NT until the week ending May 1, 2021. The mills in the country reported capability utilization rate of 77.4% during this period. The production till date has increased by 4% from 29.143 million NT during the similar period a year before. The capability utilization rates were up from 73.6% a year before.

The largest production was reported by the mills in the Southern region, which accounted for nearly 42% of the total U.S. weekly raw steel production. The output by the region totalled 756,000 NT. The production (in thousand net tons) by the other regions was as follows: North East-160, Midwest-185, Great Lakes-616 and Western-71.
