SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Further to request by the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD), the US Steel has provided an update of the repairs to bring back the facility to normal operations and their progress. The mitigation efforts are on account of breakdowns resulting from a fire incident that occurred inside the control room of the Clairton Coke Works facility on December 24, 2018.
According to company press release, the investigation into the incident is being completed. Mitigation efforts are in full swing, so as to reduce the potential impacts from the incident, it said. The press release commended the visit of the ACHD officials to the site Friday and noted that it would be pleased to have ACHD officials re-visit the site at any time. Further, US Steel committed its full cooperation to the ACHD.
US Steel has completed significant amount of repair works during the week ending January 19, 2019. It added additional natural gas to the 2nd unit underfire system. It removed 3 more axial motors and sent them for inspection and repair. Apart from commencement of installation of new roof decking, the company ordered electrical components for No.2 Control Room Building crane. Also, it completed installation of 10 out of 12 gas blanks.
US Steel plans to install the remaining two gas blanks during the current week ending January 26, 2019. Continuation of evaluation and repairs of axial compressors, rebuild of lube oil systems and installation of new roof decking are also planned for the week. In addition, it also aims to begin removal of gas valves and pipings.
