SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh-based United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) announced that it has received authorization from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) for its multi-million-dollar Consent Decree for its Clairton Plant incidents. The Decree now needs final approval by the Federal District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

The Consent Decree with the Allegheny County Health Department, Clean Air Council, and PennEnvironment and filed in Federal District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania addresses the fire incident at the Clairton Plant in 2018 and the power outages in 2019 and 2022.
Under the Consent Decree, the company has agreed to contribute $4.5 million to projects supporting public health and welfare and/or air quality improvement in the Mon Valley. It will invest around $19.5 million towards upgrades to coke oven gas cleaning facilities. In addition to covering part of the litigation costs for PennEnvironment and Clean Air Council, U.S. Steel will pay $500,000 to the Allegheny County Clean Air Fund.
As part of its commitment to further reduce emissions, U.S. Steel will permanently idle Battery #15 at Mon Valley Works - Clairton Plant. In addition, it will lower hydrogen sulfide limit in coke oven gas.
