SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Steel Authority of India (SAIL) announced its decision to undertake next phase of the expansion of its Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP). The company has decided to commence documentation work and go ahead with the feasibility study. The next phase of expansion is likely to commence during 2024-25.
The plant had recently undergone massive modernization and expansion at an investment of nearly INR 17,000 crore. This expansion had raised the plant’s total production capacity from 4 million tonne (mt) to 7 mt. The proposed second phase targets to enhance the production capacity to 10 mt, likely to come into force in 2030. The expansion is in support of the government's ambitious plans to boost country's steel output.
Commenting on the future plans, Anirban Dasgupta, Chief Executive Officer, BSP noted that the company will focus on consolidating the expansion plans over the next three to four years. The company is seeking a partner who can invest in the expansion project and provide technological support in boosting the production capacity, he added.
