New Sodra CLT Facility to Boost Production Capacity Ten-Folds

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Sodra’s new facility for cross-laminated timber (CLT) is expected to increase the company’s production capacity for timber frames by nearly ten-folds. The facility is being built at the combined plant in Värö, north of Varberg, Sweden and is expected to be commissioned by middle of next year.

The plant premises will comprise a 270 metre-long building. The facility will be able to deliver frame material for nearly 4,000 homes each year.

The company cited highly positive trend for CLT. There has been a notable increase in interest for sustainable timber construction. As per data, nearly 20% of all newly built housing units in apartment buildings had a timber frame in 2020. This is considerably higher when matched with previous years. The introduction of the Act on Climate Declarations in 2022 is expected to further promote sustainable construction, which in turn could drive up the interest in CLT.

Commenting on the new investment, Lotta Lyrå, President and CEO of Södra stated that it is a key milestone in Södra’s initiative to become one of the Nordic region’s leading players in CLT. In addition to at least halving the climate impact, the use of timber frames results in shorter construction times, he added.
