Idaho Lumber Company Fined for Alleged Clean Water Act Violations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined St. Maries, Idaho-based lumber company PotlatchDeltic Land & Lumber, LLC. for alleged violations of the Clean Water Act. The company will be required to pay $225,000 in settlement.

Under the Clean Water Act, the company is is required to comply with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. The inspection conducted at the facility in March 2017 had revealed several stormwater violations. It cited insufficient stormwater pollution prevention plan controls. Also, the company had failed to effectively address the issue or take necessary corrective measures.

In response, PotlatchDeltic Land & Lumber, LLC has agreed to take several corrective measures. In addition to investing in major facility upgrades, the company has agreed to construct a state-of-the-art filtration system and consolidate its outfalls in order to prevent pollution.

Ed Kowalski, Director of the EPA Region 10 Office highlighted the importance of effective stormwater pollution controls to protect waters. EPA is pleased that the company has taken swift action to prevent pollution. These actions will lead to significant improvement in water quality in the Pacific Northwest, Kowalski added.
