Great Lakes Region Steers U.S. Crude Steel Output Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel production posted marginal increase during the week ending on July 6, 2019 over the previous week. This is with reference to the recent weekly production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Meantime, the weekly production recorded slight decline upon comparison with the week before that.

The U.S. domestic raw steel production in the week ending July 6, 2019 totaled 1.847 million net tons (NT), at a capability utilization rate of 79.4%. The production had totaled only 1.815 million NT at much lower capacity utilization rate of 77.4% during the corresponding week last year. Meantime, the raw steel production during the week edged lower marginally by 0.2% when compared with the production during the prior week, which had totaled 1.851million NT.

The adjusted year-to-date raw steel production by the U.S. totaled 50.458 million NT through the week ending July 6, 2019 at a capacity utilization rate of 81.2%. AISI reported 5.3% jump in production over the previous year. The year-to-date mill capability utilization rate too recorded notable jump over the year. As per AISI data, the production had totaled only 47.918 million NT at a capability utilization rate of 76.7% during the corresponding period in 2018.

The major producer was the Great Lakes region, which produced nearly 688,000 NT of crude steel. The production by the region accounted for just over 37% of the total U.S. weekly production. The production by the other regions in thousands of net tons is as follows: North East-207, Midwest-203, Southern-679 and Western-70.
