Gold Fields Started Constructing Massive Gold Mine in Chile

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Gold Fields announced that it has formally started construction of the mining infrastructure at its Salares Norte Project, Chile, in line with the schedule announced last year. The company has started pre-stripping of the mine and construction of the process plant. Nearly 15% of the construction has been completed to date, said the company press release.

As per schedule, the construction of the $860 million project is expected to be completed in late-2022. It expects to produce first gold by early-2023. Upon commissioning, the mine is expected to process two million tons of ore per year for the production of dore gold. The project will create nearly 2,700 jobs during the peak of construction. It will employ around 900 employees and contractors once it becomes fully operational.

Commenting on the development, Nick Holland, CEO, Gold Fields said that the early actions taken in response to the pandemic coupled with the committed works of its employees helped the company navigate the challenges and remain on track with the earlier announced production schedule.

Meantime, Max Combes, Director noted that the Salares Norte project is likely to generate valuable productive chain in the industry and significant economic opportunities in the Atacama region.
