All-New Task Force Launched to Resolve Recycling Shortfalls

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has announced creation of a new Recycling Task Force, aimed to address the numerous challenges faced by the US and Canadian recycling industry. It aims to provide necessary awareness and guidance to various stakeholders, including its members, state, provincial and local governments and elected representatives.

The SWANA Recycling Task Force will consist of members from its various technical divisions. Also, representatives from SWANA’s International Board, local government officials, owners of private Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and equipment manufacturing companies. According to David Biderman, SWANA Executive Director and CEO, the members of the new Task Force are expected to have expertise in all elements pertaining to recycling and related industries in North America. SWANA aims to tap their expertise to the fullest and work with all its industry partners so as to implement necessary steps of action to ensure betterment and protection of recycling programs in the US and Canada.

The primary focus of operations of the Task Force will be on attempts to reduce recycling contamination, especially at a time when China has introduced tougher restrictions on waste exported to that country. Incidentally, 0.5% contamination standard proposed by the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) is due to take effect March 1st. Apart from tackling contamination issues, the Task Force will also seek ways to boost demand for recycled materials. In addition, it will also educate elected representatives about the immense potentials of economical and employment opportunities created by recycling industry.

SWANA hopes that creation of the Recycling Task Force will help to address the current disruption in recycling market activity.
