AISI Publishes 2018 Annual Statistics Report

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced publication of its 2018 Annual Statistical Report (ASR). The report provides comprehensive data on the U.S. steel industry and the North American steel industry as a whole.

According to the 135-page report, the total steel imports to the U.S. recorded a decline of 12% in 2018, as compared with the prior year. Also, the finished steel imports were down by 13% during the previous year. The imported finished steel represented 23% market share of total apparent steel consumption by the country in 2018, upon comparison with the market share of 27% reported in 2017.

The total shipments from domestic steel mills surged higher by 5% year-on-year to total 95.3 million net tons in 2018. The shipments were up by 4% when matched with the average shipments during the past five-year period. The key end-use markets for shipments of steel products from domestic mills were construction and automotive industries. The report also states that U.S. raw steel production totaled 95 million net tons in 2018.

Speaking on the release of ASR, Thomas J. Gibson, President and CEO, AISI stated that the report serves as a critical source of data for steel industry that has been at the center of the economic policy debate on both the national and global level in 2018. The report, containing numerous charts, graphs and other information, is a comprehensive and reliable reference for steel industry statistics, he added.
