SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced publication of the Annual Statistical Report (ASR) for 2021. The report provides comprehensive report on the American steel industry in general and select data on the North American steel industry.
According to the report, the shipments from domestic U.S. mills totalled 94.7 million net tons during the previous year. This is significantly higher by 16.9% from 2020. The leading end markets for U.S.-produced steel products continued to be the construction and automotive industries. The U.S. raw steel production climbed higher by 18% year-on-year to total 94.6 million net tons in 2021.
The report indicates that steel imports to the country recorded increase for the first time in four years. The total steel imports surged higher by 42.9% in 2021, whereas the finished steel imports were up by 41% year-on-year. The imports accounted for 21% share of apparent steel consumption in the country, ASR report said.
The ASR report includes selected statistical highlights on shipments, apparent supply, imports, employment and raw steel data over a 10-year period, along with detailed data on capability utilization, steel imports and exports.
