World crude steel production surged 7% in January

According to the most recent statistics published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by 67 member countries was 136.514 million tonnes (Mt) in January this year.

World crude steel production surged 7% in January

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the most recent statistics published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by 67 member countries was 136.514 million tonnes (Mt) in January 2017, rising significantly by 7.0% in comparison with the production of 127.562 Mt during same month a year before.

South America

The crude steel production by South American countries jumped higher significantly during the month of January this year. The total monthly output surged higher by 11.6% to 3.562 Million tonnes.

The total crude steel production by Argentina during January was 291,000 tonnes, down considerably by 11.6% in comparison with the January 2016 production of 329,000 tonnes. Brazil produced 2.856 Million tonnes of crude steel during the month. The monthly production edged higher by 14.4% when compared with 2.497 Million tonnes production achieved during January 2016. Chile’s January crude steel production dropped considerably by nearly 11.7% to 90,000 tonnes in January 2017. The total crude steel production by Colombia was down marginally by 2.6% to 95,000 tonnes.

Ecuador’s crude steel output increased considerably by nearly 6% on year-on-year basis. The crude steel output by Ecuador was 50,000 tonnes in January this year, as compared with 47,000 tonnes during January 2016.  Paraguay’s crude steel output skyrocketed by over 340% during the month.

The crude steel output by Peru recorded notable increase of 62.9% year-on-year. The crude steel output of Uruguay witnessed sharp rise of 385% when compared with the year before levels. Venezuelan production increased considerably by nearly 28% year-on-year from 55,000 tonnes to around 70,000 tonnes.

North America

The crude steel production by North American countries increased significantly by 4.0% during the month of January 2017 year-on-year. The production totaled 9.444 Mt during the month.

The total crude steel production by Canada during first month of the year was 1.005 Mt, considerably lower by 11.7% when compared with the January 2016 production. The US produced 6.874 Million tonnes of crude steel, higher by 6.5% when compared with 6.456 Million tonnes production achieved during January 2016. The total crude steel production by Mexico edged higher by nearly 8.5% from 1.393 Mt in January ‘16 to 1.510 Mt in January this year.

The Cuban crude steel production increased by around 9% year-on-year to 20,000 tonnes. The crude steel output by El Salvador was estimated at 10,000 tonnes in January this year, higher by nearly 21% when compared with January 2016. Guatemala produced 25,000 tonnes in December. The crude steel output by Trinidad & Tobago nosedived to zero in during January 2017 from 36,000 tonnes during same month in 2016.

Asia

The crude steel production by Asia rose by 7.1% during the month of January 2017 year-on-year.

The total crude steel production by China during the month was 67.200 Million tonnes, rising by 7.4% when compared with the production of 62.555 Mt during January 2016. India produced 8.400 Million tonnes of crude steel, significantly higher by 12% when compared with 7.501 Million tonnes production achieved during January last year.

Japan reported marginal increase of 2.7% in monthly crude steel output during the month. Japan's crude steel output was up from 8.768 Million tonnes in January 2016 to 9.002 Million tonnes.

South Korean crude steel production increased slightly by 3.2% from 5.677 Million tonnes in January 2016 to 5.860 Million tonnes. Meantime, Pakistan’s crude steel output totaled 340,000 tonnes during the month.

The Taiwanese Jan ‘17 crude steel output rose 4.4% year-on-year to 1.870 Million tonnes from 1.790 Million tonnes during same month last year. Also, Thailand’s crude steel output increased by 1.8% from 304,000 tonnes during Jan ’16 to almost 310,000 tonnes in Jan ‘17.

Africa

The crude steel production by the African region marked 15.6% jump during the month of January year-on-year.

Egypt produced 535,000 tonnes of crude steel, surging higher by 38.4% when compared to 387,000 tonnes production achieved during January 2016. Libya’s crude steel output dropped to 50,000 tonnes, when matched with the production of 76,000 tonnes during the same month a year before. Morocco’s output surged almost 132% to 50,000 tonnes, when compared to 22,000 tonnes production achieved during January 2016. South Africa’s crude steel output increased marginally by 1.2% to 533,000 tonnes during the month when matched with the production figures of 526,000 tonnes during the same month a year before.

Other regions

The crude steel production by the Middle East region surged higher by 13.5% during the month of January ’17 year-on-year. EU-28 region recorded increase of 2.4% in crude steel output during the first month of 2017. The output by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) too increased significantly by 11.4% during the month. Also, Oceania region recorded 6.2% jump in output.
