Upstate Shredding-Weitsman Recycling recognized by AMM as 'Scrap Company of the Year'

ALBANY (Scrap Monster): Owego, New York-based Upstate Shredding-Weitsman Recycling has been selected as the ‘Scrap Company of the Year’ by American Metal Market (AMM). This is the second consecutive year that the scrap metal processing company has won the award. The award was presented during the annual AMM awards dinner recently held at The Edison Ballroom in NY City. Thousands of scrap metal recycling companies were in the race for the prestigious award. Out of these companies, Upstate Shredding-Weitsman Recycling and Jefferson Iron and Metal Brokerage had emerged as the two finalists.

Adam Weitsman, CEO, Upstate Shredding-Weitsman Recycling noted that he is shocked to know that the company has now won the honor in consecutive years. The company is proud to be the winner during 2015 and 2016- the two years being considered as the most trying years in the history of scrap metal recycling industry. AMM’s ‘Scrap Company of the Year’ award is the largest honor in scrap and recycling to be given away in North America, he added.

Weitsman stated that the prestigious honor is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of employees throughout New York and Pennsylvania. He thanked AMM and the judges for recognizing the tireless dedication, commitment and excellence of employees, by selecting the company from among the extremely deserving scrap metal recycling companies throughout North America.

The scrap metal recycling industry had witnessed tough times throughout the entire year 2015 and the early period of 2016. Many companies have downsized, laid off workers or closed locations during this period. On the contrary, Upstate Shredding reported a period of aggressive growth and expansion. The company had recently announced opening of its second shredder facility in New castle, Pennsylvania. In addition, the company had reported excellent operating performance by posting profits for 40 consecutive quarters. Moreover, the company has not staged even a single layoff during the period. The company, with the goal of earning $1 billion in annual sales during 2016, has committed to acquiring new locations and supporting technologies.

The judging panel applauded the company in demonstrating best practices for achieving outstanding results and noted that they embody best-in-class practices as measured by global standards.

The company was recently named the winner of the ‘Industry Leadership Award in the Scrap & Recycling’ by the business information company Platts as part of its Global Metals Awards program.
