Spark ignites gas left in the tank of scrapped vehicle; $25,000 worth scrap metal burned

GIRARD (Scrap Monster): Fire broke out at Interstate Shredding, LLC. at around 4 pm yesterday. Girard Fire crews were called to the scrap metal recycling center in the 27 Furnace Lane, after huge blaze was reported at the scrap metal facility.

Firefighters responded to the scene with the new ladder truck which enabled them to attack the fire from the top of the pile. The Liberty Fire Department was on stand-by to deal with any emergency situation. As per fire officials, piles of scrap parts from recycled cars and trucks burned. The fire could be seen for miles, they added.

According to initial assumption, the gas left over in the tank of a scrapped vehicle might be the reason for the fire. A crane operator was moving the vehicles. A spark might have ignited the gas which caused the pile to go up in flames.

Although no injuries reported so far, at least $25,000 worth scrap metal might have burned.

Interstate Shredding, LLC is a 28 acre scrap metal recycling facility, which dates back to the 1950’s. The company specializes in automobile and scrap shredding, with a total shredding capability of 15,000 to 20,000 tons of scrap per month.
