Safety audit by steel firms to commence today: Worldsteel Association

WASHINGTON (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has called upon its members to conduct an industry-wide safety audit across the industry in connection with the Steel Safety Day on 28th April. It coincides with the observance of World Safety Day by International Labour Organization.

The Association urged all the participating organizations to conduct safety audit during the two week period from April 14th to 28th. The audit should identify the main causes of safety hazards within the industry and propose action plans to counter the safety risks on each site.

The audit specifically focuses on moving machinery, falling from heights, falling objects, Asp hyxiation or gassing and Cranes. The Association proposes preventive measures to avoid possible dangers caused by the highlighted common causes of safety incidents.

According to Edwin Basson, Director General, worldsteel, most of the operational activities in the modern steel industry is automated, thereby reducing the hazards and safety risks in working environment. However, safety incidents still happen in steel industry. The ultimate aim of the audit is to ensure that all applicable measures are being put in place to prevent all injuries and work-related illness, he added.

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world. worldsteel represents approximately 170 steel producers (including 17 of the world's 20 largest steel companies), national and regional steel industry associations, and steel research institutes. worldsteel members represent around 85% of world steel production.
