River Metals Recycling achieves INSHARP recertification

GREENSBURG (Scrap Monster): River Metals Recycling (RMR), located in Greensburg, received recertification in the Indiana Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (INSHARP). With no OSHA-recordable injury for more than four years, (five consecutive years to date), the company shines as an example of what Indiana businesses can achieve in workplace injury and illness prevention. The Greensburg facility achieved the original INSHARP certification in August 2014.

River Metals Recycling employs 245 teammates, with five on-site in Greensburg. In business for nine years, RMR purchases materials to recycle, such as old cars, aluminum cans, and other scrap metals, which are processed for both non-ferrous and ferrous recycling. The facility then prepares vehicles for final shredding.

“River Metals Recycling maintains an excellent culture of occupational safety and health thanks to the hard work by their teammates,” said Indiana Department of Labor (IDOL) Commissioner Rick J. Ruble. By taking a proactive approach, rather than a reactive approach, RMR reduces accidents, and strives to prevent them all together. Ruble stated, “We are very impressed by what this company has accomplished for not one, not two, but more than four years straight.”

To participate in INSHARP, a company must develop, implement and maintain an exemplary worker safety and health management system and pass a comprehensive safety and health evaluation by the IDOL. In addition, the facility’s occupational injury and illness rates must be below the national industry average. Less than 50 Indiana employers have achieved INSHARP certification.

Bob Eviston, RMR President, thanked the Greensburg team for operating for more than four straight years without any injuries, and for their daily contribution to the company’s success. He stated “first and foremost, to the River Metals Recycling Greensburg recycling team, congratulations and thank you for achieving the INSHARP recertification! As you know, this honor is a result of your ongoing personal commitment to working safely, as well as looking out for your fellow teammates, our customers, our suppliers, our vendors and our visitors to the recycling facility every day. Congratulations to all RMR Greensburg teammates on receiving this important INSHARP recertification.”

Also in attendance at the ceremony were River Metals Recycling corporate officials, Indiana District 55 Representative Cindy Ziemke (R-Oldenburg) , Greensburg Mayor Dan Manus, and Jeff Emsweller, Executive Director of the Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce. River Metals Recycling is a member of the Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce.

The company’s workplace culture comes from a series of efforts, including multiple preventative and training programs. While the national industry average occupational injury and illness rate is 47 per 100 workers, River Metals Recycling Greensburg has been OSHA-recordable injury free for more than four years.

River Metals Recycling is the largest scrap recycler in Kentucky and in the greater Cincinnati area, with 9 locations in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. RMR is headquartered in Crescent Springs, Kentucky and has nearly 250 teammates. RMR’s Greensburg recycling center buys ferrous scrap as well as common household nonferrous scrap metal items like aluminum cans and other aluminum, stainless steel, copper and brass products.

RMR is wholly owned by The David J. Joseph Company (DJJ). Founded in 1885, DJJ is one of the largest scrap brokers/processors in the United States providing scrap brokerage, recycling and transportation services. DJJ is part of Nucor Corporation’s family of companies. Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Nucor is the leading purchaser of ferrous scrap and the largest recycler in North America, with operating facilities primarily in the U.S. and Canada.
