Police seize huge quantities of gold plated coins and cash in raids

CHENNAI (Scrap Monster):  The police seized huge sums of money and gold-plated coins during random vehicle checks held in the city of Coimbatore in Southern part of India. The cash and coins were handed over to special police squads on election duty. Further to announcement of election schedule in the country, surveillance squads are being empowered to investigate suspicious transportation of gold, cash and other valuable items.

As many as 1,890 gold-plated coins which are worth over Rs 2 lakhs was seized at a border check post from a person who claim to be working for a jewellery shop. The unaccounted coins were seized by the police.

The police and the revenue officials together seized unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs. 26.06 lakh from a petrol bunk owner and seven vegetable traders in the district on Sunday. The petrol bunk owner was found carrying Rs. 3.99 lakhs, for which he failed to produce source of income. The remaining Rs.22.07 lakhs were seized from seven vegetable traders travelling in three vehicles. The cash was seized as the traders failed to provide sufficient documents to substantiate the purpose of the cash.

In addition, state police in collaboration with the election officials seized cash in excess of 10 lakhs in 6 separate incidents around the City.

With the election code of conduct in place, the Election Commission has implemented various regulatory steps to combat black money. Gold or cash in excess of Rs.10 lakhs will be reported to the I-T department.
