Plastics could effectively contribute to sustainability: CPIA

TORONTO (Scrap Monster):  The Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA) through its Intelligent Plastic campaign tries to underline the fact that plastics could contribute in a big way towards sustainability. The advancements in plastics has not only improved way of life but also ensured that natural resources are preserved for the future.

Plastics have contributed to sustainability in various sectors such as transportation, health care and packaging to name a few. The lightweight feature of plastics has made it the favorite of automobile industry. New plastic composites offer light weight and durable solutions to automakers across the world.

In addition, lightweight plastic packaging also protects food and other products. More than 50% of typical consumer goods use lightweight plastics for packaging. The reduced weight saves huge sums of money by saving fuel while transportation. Plastic packaging also can be reused. The plastic packaging used to store food can be used as serving dish. It can also be used as freezer or microwave containers.

Plastic bags and packaging can be recycled conveniently. The recycled plastic could also be used to create new consumer products. Waste-to-energy facilities generate power by recovering the energy inherent in non-recycled plastics and other materials, CPIA noted.
