NWRA publishes new industry standards for MRFs

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): The National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA) has announced the release of new industry standards for material recovery facilities (MRFs). The new standard pertains to implementation of technology and maintenance of operations at MRFs. The new ANSI Z245.41-2015 standard specifically addresses single-stream processing.

The previous standard released in 2008 had focused on dual stream processing streams, which commonly existed during those times. However, over the years, recycling industry has undergone significant changes. The technological advances have led to most MRFs switching to state-of-the-art equipment. The operational procedures at MRFs have gone through rapid changes.

According to Susan Eppes, Chair of the Z245 Accredited Standards Committee, the new standard addresses these changes and keeps manufacturers and operators of MRFs updated with present day safety requirements. The new standard also deals with sorting done mechanically using equipment such as separator screens, optical sorters and glass breakers.

The National Waste & Recycling Association is the leading organization providing leadership, advocacy, research, education and safety expertise for the waste and recycling industries. NWRA is the ANSI accredited standards developer and organizational member representing waste and recycling companies throughout the United States involved in the collection of waste, recyclables, organics and composting, and the production of waste-based energy.

The American National Standards Institute is a private non-profit organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products, services, processes, systems, and personnel in the United States.

The ANSI Z245.41 - 2015 Standard is available for purchase at NWRA’s E-Store for $50 for members and $100 for non-members.
