The Royal Canadian Mint has released new gold and silver coins in memory of Pope John Paul II, one of the greatest popes of 20th century. It is said that the Pope John Paul II was the first pope visiting Canada and the Royal Canadian Mint is proud to commemorate his holy visit.

OTTAVA (Scrap Monster): The Royal Canadian Mint has released new gold and silver coins in memory of Pope John Paul II, one of the greatest popes of 20th century. It is said that the Pope John Paul II was the first pope visiting Canada and the Royal Canadian Mint is proud to commemorate his holy visit.

These new coins depict the Pope John Paul II conducting Holy Mass are designed by Mr. Trevor Tennant. The coins bear the inscriptions JOHN PAUL II, JEAN-PAUL II and CANADA on the obverse. The reverse of the coins depict Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscriptions ELIZABETH II, 2014, D G REGINA and the legal tender face value of 25 DOLLARS for the gold coin and 10 DOLLARS for the silver coin placed around queen’s portrait.

The mintage capacity of gold coin is 1,500 and silver coin is 8,500. The composition of each gold coin is 99.99% pure gold and weight is 7.8 g. The composition of each silver coin is 99.99% pure silver and weight is 23.17g.

As per the history, Karol Jozef Wojtyla was born in Wadowice, Poland. He completed his seminary education in underground while Nazi seized Poland. His ordination was on Nov. 1, 1946, consecrated a bishop on Sept. 28, 1958 and became cardinal after 10 years. He was elected as pope on Oct. 16, 1978, at age 58 and received the name Pope John Paul II. During his papal mission he visited 129 countries. Pope Benedict XVI announced the commencement of the canonization process after Pope John Paul II’s death on April 2, 2005 and Pope Francis confirmed his approval on July 4, 2013 with the canonization ceremony scheduled for April 27, 2014.
