Nearly 9 tonnes of waste paper recycled in five months

NEW DELHI (Scrap Monster): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved an important recycling milestone by recycling as much as 8.8 tonnes of paper over the period of past five months. The recycling initiative was implemented in DMRC’s office premises in co-operation with a specialized recycling agency.

According to DMRC, the recycling policy was framed during August last year. The contract involves collection of used paper from the authority’s offices located in the city and delivering it back for reuse, after recycling.

Surveys indicate that the consumption of fresh paper has reduced substantially over the past five-month period since its inception. This has not only led to savings in power and water, but also has contributed to significant reduction of carbon emissions, thereby protecting the environment. Nearly 16 MW of electricity has been saved during this period. In addition it has also reduced water consumption by approximately 2,200 kilo litres per day.

The paper recycling initiative is viewed as continuation to DMRC’s earlier recycling initiatives which covered materials such as horticultural waste, wooden materials and SS steel sheets.

Established in 1995, DMRC has been instrumental in ushering in a new era in the sphere of mass urban transportation in India. DMRC is the first to introduce eco-friendly services for the first time in India. The Delhi Metro has also contributed tremendously on the environment front by becoming the first ever railway project in the world to claim carbon credits for regenerative braking. DMRC has also been certified by the United Nations (UN) as the first Metro Rail and Rail based system in the world to get carbon Credits for reducing Green House gas emissions as it has helped to reduce pollution levels in the city by 6.3 lakh tons every year thus helping in reducing global warming.
