The trade statistics released by the Taiwan's Directorate General of Customs for the whole of 2016 indicates marginal decline in iron ore imports by the country.

Iron Ore imports by Taiwan record marginal decline in 2016

BEIJING (Scrap Monster): The trade statistics released by the Taiwan’s Directorate General of Customs for the full year 2016 indicates marginal decrease in iron ore imports by the country. However, the imports during the month of December last year surged higher when compared with the same month a year before.

Lump/Fines

The imports of lump/fines by the country totaled 1.258 million tonnes in Dec ‘16, down by 4.5% when matched with imports of 1.317 Million tonnes in December 2015. The largest exporter of iron ore lump/fines to Taiwan during December last year was Australia. The imports from Australia totaled 1.031 Million tonnes, accounting for almost 82% of the total imports of lump/fines by Taiwan during the month. The import price averaged at $65.70 per ton and the value of imports totaled $67.751 million. The other key import source was Brazil (227,280 tonnes). The value of imports from Brazil totaled $13.344 million at an average price of $58.7 per ton.

Pellets

Brazil was the key pellet exporter to Taiwan during Dec ’16. The pellet imports from Brazil totaled 208,834 tonnes. China exported 20 tonnes of pellets to Taiwan during the month. The monthly pellet imports by Taiwan surged higher by nearly 600% in December 2016, when matched with the imports of 30,300 tonnes during the same month a year before.

Combined

Taiwan’s iron ore imports during the month totaled 1.467 Million tonnes, significantly higher by nearly 9% when compared with the imports during the same month a year before. Taiwan had imported 1.347 Million tonnes of iron ore during December 2015. The import prices averaged at $65.7 per tonne, nearly 26% higher year-on-year. The iron ore import prices during December last year had averaged at $52.20 per tonne. The country’s Dec ’16 iron ore imports were valued at $96.330 million, increasing sharply by 37% when compared with the previous year.

The largest exporter of iron ore to Taiwan during December this year was Australia. The imports from Australia totaled 1.031 Million tonnes, accounting for slightly over 72% of the total imports by Taiwan during the month. The price of iron ore import from the country averaged at $65.7 per tonne. The second largest source of iron ore import by the country was Brazil with 436,093 tonnes. The iron ore import prices from Brazil averaged at $65.4 per tonne during the month. The third largest exporter of iron ore to Taiwan was China with 20 tonnes.

Cumulative imports

The largest exporter of iron ore lump/fines to Taiwan during 2016 was Australia. The imports from Australia totaled 17.274 Million tonnes, accounting for nearly 82% of the total imports of lump/fines by Taiwan during the entire year. The Taiwanese lump/fines import has registered marginal increase of 2.7% over the previous year. Brazil was the largest pellet exporter to Taiwan during 2016. The yearly pellet imports totaled 2.407 Million tonnes. The pellet imports from Brazil totaled 1.890 Million tonnes. The cumulative pellet imports by the country have dropped by over 27% when compared with 2015.

The cumulative iron ore imports by Taiwan during the entire year 2016 totaled 23.462 Million tonnes. The imports during the year were down marginally by 1.5% when matched with the imports of 23.814 Million tonnes during 2015. The overall price of imports dropped sharply by 13.6% from $65.5 per ton to $56.6 per ton. 

The largest exporter of iron ore to Taiwan during the previous year was Australia. The imports from Australia totaled 17.274 Million tonnes, accounting for almost 74% of the total imports by Taiwan during the period. The price of iron ore import from the country averaged at $56.6 per tonne. The second largest source of iron ore import by the country was Brazil with 5.118 Million tonnes. The iron ore import prices from Brazil averaged at $54.0 per tonne during the year. The other key exporters during 2016 were Canada (975,471 tonnes), China (92,590 tonnes) and Philippines (1,901 tonnes).
