We were recently digging around in the archives and discovered company records that Thaddeus Zommer first started the company in 1937. (Who knew? For years, we thought it was 1945…) It all began with a humble horse drawn cart that Tad used to collect food scraps during the Great Depression. Five generations later, Waste Material Trucking Company has developed into a successful and thriving family business.
Today, WMTC provides weekly residential curbside waste collection, bi-weekly recyclable collection, and bulk waste collection to thousands of customers in the Avon, Farmington, and Southington areas. We also provide commercial dumpster services to businesses throughout central Connecticut.
Our goals remain the same from Tad Zommer’s initial vision: honest hard work, the support of family, superior customer service, loyalty to employees, and long-standing relationships with municipalities.
Waste Material Trucking Company, Inc. (WMTC) is a family-owned company that has provided waste and recycling services to Connecticut residents and businesses since 1937.
A locally owned and operated business, Waste Material Trucking Company is proud that the fifth generation of their family is carrying the values and traditions of the business forward into the next era. WMTC collects and transports municipal solid waste and recyclables, with special experience and qualifications in residential curbside services, and additional experience in bulky household waste and commercial waste services and transportation.
The company’s corporate office is located at 105 Dunham Place in Southington, CT. WMTC maintains a large fleet of 15 trucks at their second location and operations site in Unionville at 440 New Britain Avenue, Farmington, CT. They pride themselves in a fleet that is kept clean, well maintained, and in excellent road condition.
WMTC is an active member in many of the leading state and national trade organizations including the National Solid Wastes Management Association, the Connecticut Motor Transport Association, and the Connecticut Business & Industry Association.
Waste Material Trucking Company is proud to have worked in the town of Southington since 1947. They currently service approximately 5,500 private customers, offering weekly residential curbside waste collection and bi-weekly recyclable collection.
WMTC’s experience in transitioning traditional refuse collection into automated curbside services began in 1995 in Southington. The company inventoried and delivered 2,500 carts to customers in town and integrated a special database to manage cart information. After this initial start-up period, WMTC went on to automate services for an additional 3,000 customers in Southington. The launch of the automated trash program paved the way for a very smooth transition to automated recycling. In 2009, the company began to introduce single stream recycling to Southington.
Trash must be put out the night before your collection day and placed at the curb. Please be sure your trash receptacle is 3 to 5 feet away from any obstacles such as your recycling containers, mailboxes, trees, etc. Any obstructions that block the truck's access to your container may prevent the driver from emptying it.
One priority that the Zommer family will forever guard as its highest standard is excellent customer service.
Caring about customer satisfaction is a value that has been handed down from one generation to the next. Whether it’s cleaning up food scraps on the ground from a pesky raccoon, or going out on a weekend to collect trash from customers who forgot their pickup day, making people feel like they are getting more than what they pay for is the ultimate goal at WMTC.
This customer service exceptionality is what has consistently set the company apart from the competition for decades.
Part of the formula for WMTC’s success in creating happy customers is attributed to the owners’ involvement in the day-to-day operations. This hands-on approach is especially beneficial across the millions of miles that the trucks have traveled and the millions of collection services provided across central Connecticut.
Here are two of WMTC’s defining customer service policies, in place as long as any Zommers can remember.
If a customer has a concern, it’s our policy to resolve it within 24 hours. We have friendly well-trained staff answering our phones and running our office operations who are accessible Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., but they are no strangers to working weekends.
