Mountain House Turns Trail Trash into Campfire-Ready Gear in New Recycling Contest

TRENTON, N.J., June 23, 2025 — Mountain House®, the trusted name in freeze-dried meals for outdoor adventurers, is launching a national recycling contest that rewards participants for keeping packaging waste out of our environment.

Through the Mountain House Free Recycling Program, operated in partnership with TerraCycle®, campers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts can recycle used Mountain House flexible pouches that aren’t typically accepted through local recycling services. Between July 1 and August 31, 2025, anyone who returns eligible packaging will be entered to win a prize bundle ideal for relaxing at the campsite, by the fire pit, or wherever you unwind outdoors.

Three winners will be selected to receive:

  • A Mountain House Expedition Meal Assortment Bucket

  • A set (2) of Mountain House sling-back chairs made from recycled packaging

Participation is free and easy—just sign up for the Mountain House Free Recycling Program on TerraCycle’s website, download a prepaid shipping label, and send in empty Mountain House packaging between July 1 and August 31. Once received, the packaging is recycled into plastic pellets that are used to make durable products, like furniture, storage containers, and decking materials, helping keep hard-to-recycle materials out of landfills and incinerators and in use.

“Recycling shouldn’t stop where the pavement ends,” said Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO of TerraCycle. “Through this program, we’re giving people a simple way to keep packaging in use and off the trail—showing that sustainability can be just as much a part of the journey as the adventure itself.”

The Mountain House Free Recycling Program is an ongoing collection program open to any individual, household, school, or community group. For each piece of eligible packaging sent in using a prepaid shipping label, participants earn TerraCycle Recycling Rewards points that can be redeemed for charitable gifts or cash donations to the school or nonprofit of their choice.
