The American Primary Aluminum Association Criticizes Hundreds of Millions of Dollars in NEW Canadian Aluminum Subsidies

Washington, DC; September 12, 2025 – The American Primary Aluminum Association (APAA) criticizes Canada’s new $5 billion tariff relief fund, which will provide “hundreds of millions of dollars” to Canada’s aluminum sector according to Industry Minister Mélanie Joly. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) previously found that Canada’s aluminum industry is supported by more than $850 million in government subsidies.

“With the Canadian Government now giving hundreds of millions more to boost Canadian aluminum production, this is just more of the same from Canada” remarked APAA President Mark Duffy. Rather than allowing their producers to compete on a free market basis, Canada has chosen to double down and distort the global market further at the expense of U.S. aluminum workers. With Canada now throwing hundreds of millions in public dollars at aluminum producers in Quebec, we applaud President Trump for maintaining the 50% aluminum tariff without exceptions or exemptions to put America First.

In 2000, there were 23 aluminum smelters in America and 10 in Canada. Now as a direct result of Canadian subsidies, Canada still has 10 aluminum smelters, and America only has four left. The APAA will continue to fight for thousands of American aluminum workers as we work to rebuild domestic aluminum manufacturing.
