C1018 Cold Finish Flat Bar

C1018 Cold Finish Flat Bar

Characteristics

C1018 Cold Finish Flat Bar is a low carbon general purpose steel. It is one of the most abundantly available metal grades. C1018 Cold Finish Flat, is a rolled steel product with close dimensional accuracy, smooth surface finish, and increased mechanical properties and machinability. This metal can easily be formed, machined and welded. One of the more important alloying elements is magnesium which makes this steel ideal for carburized parts since it develops a harder and more uniform case. This metal is formed by cold drawing through dies to the required size. It has a tensile strength of 64,000 psi, yield strength of 54,000 psi and an elongation of 15% in 2”.

Cold Rolled Steel has a favorable combination of strength, ductility, and ease of machining. This makes it a great general purpose steel that comes in many shapes including: round bar, square bar, flat bar. The chemical structure of Cold Rolled Steel is similar to Hot Rolled Steel, but Cold Rolled offers a better surface finish.C1018 is a general purpose low carbon steel with good case hardening qualities. It has a higher manganese content than certain other low carbon grades, such as 1020. With higher manganese, 1018 is better steel for carburized parts, since it produces a harder and more uniform case. It also has higher mechanical properties and better machinability due to the cold drawing process. Most 1018 is produced by cold drawing.

1018 Steel is one of the most commonly produced alloys of the "cold-rolled" steels. It is often referred to as "low carbon" or "mild steel". It offers good hardening properties, fair machining, and can be readily brazed or welded. It is considered a medium strength steel alloy. Cold Finished or "cold rolled" steel bars have a smooth, oiled finish with sharp square corners.

  • Specifications: ASTM A108 (ASTM A108 -07 Standard Specification for Steel Bar, Carbon and Alloy, Cold-Finished.)
  • AKA: Cold Roll Flat, CRS Flat, CF Flat
  • Workability: Excellent for Threading, Drilling, Machining and Sawing.
  • Mechanical Properties: Brinell = 126, Tensile = 64,000 +/-,  Yield = 54,000 +/-.
  • Alloy: 1018
  • Characteristics: Oiled surface, smooth dark grey finish. Sharp or defined edges. Accurate dimensions throughout length.

Applications

C1018 Cold Finish Flat is a general purpose low carbon steel with good case hardening qualities and is especially suited for cold forming and bending. Designed for close tolerance. Commonly used for machining, jigs, templates. Fixtures, mounting plates, machine components, etc. The metal is commonly used in a variety of products like gears, shafts, spindles, king pins, chain pins, ratchets, etc.

For severe bends, stress relieving may be necessary to prevent cracking. It is highly suitable for carburized parts, such as gears, ratchets, worms, pinions, pins, chain pins, dowels, machine parts, non-critical components of tool and die sets, tool holders, etc. It is used when good workability is required, on parts requiring threading, drilling, punching and machining. It is extensively used for mounting plates, spacers and fixtures. C1018 is suitable for all applications that do not require the greater strength of high carbon and alloy steels.
