Characteristics

6063 aluminum bar is known primarily as an architectural grade of aluminum due to its attractive, smooth finish. The aluminum 6063 also called architectural aluminum, has a very good surface finish.  However it has half the strength of aluminum 6061 alloys. The aluminum 6063 alloy is rated "Excellent" for anodizing. It exhibits the same strength, light weight and anti-corrosion properties as other grades.  6063 aluminum is also easy to form, extrude and weld, making it a good material for custom decorative components. Anodizing increases its corrosion-resistance for exposed products.

6063 is often called architectural aluminum for two reasons - first, it has a surface finish that is far smoother than the other commercially available alloys, and second, its strength is significantly less (roughly half the strength of 6061), making it suited for applications where strength is not the foremost consideration. 6063 is rated as "Good" for forming and cold working operations, "Excellent" for anodizing, and "Fair" for machining.

Applications

6063 aluminum bar is used for extruded and formed parts that can combine support with decoration.  It is used for trim, decorative screens and grates and ornamental frames and supports. Commonly used in the manufacture of furniture, windows, stair rails, and in pipe railing. 6063 (UNS A96063) is an aluminum bar that offers good extrudability and high quality surface. This alloy is used for standard architectural shapes, custom solids and heat sinks. Also used for electrical applications in T5, T52 & T6 due to its electrical conductivity. It has a high resistance to corrosion with excellent finishing characteristics.  6063 has average machinability and forming hot or cold is acceptable. Also due to its conductivity it is utilized in electrical substations. 6061 Aluminum Flat is widely used for all types of fabrication projects where lightweight and corrosion resistance is a concern.
