Why We Do What We Do

People depend on our resources. They count on us to get the job done, and for good reason. Most of the resources we provide are found in products used every day in cities, neighborhoods, businesses, and homes around the globe. Our products are used in power generation, home construction, cement, aluminum and steel manufacturing; agriculture and food production, and water and air filtration systems, as well as in the creation of high impact plastics, paints and carbon fibers.

Where We Give Back

While our work for our customers is important, William Koch, and the more than 1300 men and women that make up the Oxbow organization, volunteer thousands of hours every year to improve the quality of life for others. Our organizational philosophy of giving back extends into the fabric of communities around the world. Whether it is building little league fields in Colorado, underwriting neighborhood parks in Argentina, or helping a high school science program blossom in Illinois, we believe it is our responsibility to help improve the communities where our employees live and work

History & Awards

We have long been developing and contributing to our industry, communities and the economies where we live and operate around the world. At its beginnings, the Oxbow Group focused attention on diverse interests, including alternative energy, publishing, real-estate, and petroleum. After a few years we shifted our area of interests and narrowed our focus to become one of the largest marketing companies of coal and petroleum coke in the world.

Over time, we've expanded into such industries as coal, calcined petroleum coke, sulphur, fertilizer, and other areas to become a diversified world leader in the natural resource industry.

Protecting our environment and keeping our employees and the community safe is our ongoing commitment. We are pleased to be recognized for our environmental stewardship over the years, and we wish to thank the dedication of our teams for their continuous efforts.

Environment Reclamation Success

As a company, we take our role of environmental stewardship to heart. Coal mining provides a plentiful and relatively low priced energy source. Reclamation affords our company, and our industry, an opportunity to restore the land to a productive and useful area for future development or preservation.

We strive to restore the land to its original condition or better. That is why it is with great pride that our company received the Outstanding Steep Slope Reclamation Award from the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology.

In 2012, Oxbow teamed with the Aspen Skiing Company, Holy Cross Electric, and Vessels Coal Gas to build the first coal mine methane-fueled electric generator west of the Mississippi River. Instead of venting methane gas in to the atmosphere, Oxbow now converts it into enough electricity to power four ski mountains, three hotels and 17 restaurants.

Community Sustainable Development

The people living in the historic mining town of Somerset Colorado had a problem: their drinking water was untreated coming directly from the Gunnison River. Oxbow Mining LLC contributed $175,000 towards building a new water filtration plant. "We're real fortunate to have Oxbow pay for a water treatment plant," said Phillip Buskirk, president of the Somerset Domestic Waterworks District. "Oxbow helps Somerset a lot by running this." Oxbow pays for the technical operators and handles around-the-clock operations, which provide 65,000 gallons of water a day for the mine and residents of Somerset. Once coal mining is completed and the land reclaimed, Oxbow plans to turn the water treatment system over to the Somerset Domestic Waterworks District.
