Vote on New Mobile Recycling Plan Delayed Until June

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): A City Council vote on a Stimpson administration plan to revamp Mobile’s recycling program has been postponed until next month. Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson has strongly advocated for the proposal, arguing that a single-stream recycling process, meaning one that doesn’t require patrons to separate their various recyclable materials, would help improve the percentage of waste that Mobile recycles. City officials also have said they want to establish collection sites throughout the city.

The single-stream process already is undergoing a test run at the city’s established Midtown recycling site, at 1451 Government St. But when two related long-term contracts came before the city council in April, some members expressed concern that the plan could cause more legal difficulties between the city’s Solid Waste Authority and Waste Management, which handles the city’s garbage.

A vote was delayed in order to allow time for those issues to be clarified. On Tuesday, Council President Gina Gregory said she’d like to see the vote deferred again, this time to mid-June. Gregory said the administration had requested the delay, and that a meeting between the Solid Waste Authority and Waste Management was scheduled to take place in the near future.
