Can SMM Really Replace the 3R’s, Recovery and Disposal?

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): The keynote panel at the Federation of New York Solid Waste Association’s Conference and Trade Show at The Sagamore from May 21 – 24, 2017 will feature three notable private and public sector leaders answering the critical question in the waste and recycling industry at this moment: Can Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Really Replace the 3R’s, Recovery, and Disposal?

New York City’s Department of Sanitation Commissioner, Kathryn Garcia, Resource Recycling System’s Materials Management expert, Resa Dimino, and Covanta’s Vice President of Environmental Science & Community Affairs, John G. Waffenschmidt, will engage in an exciting discussion about the practicalities of SMM—the systematic approach to lifecycle thinking coined by the EPA. The panel will be moderated by Michele Nestor, expert on the rapidly evolving waste industry.

“Our opening plenary is designed to set the stage for continued discussion and debate throughout the conference,” said Meg Morris, Chairperson of the Federation. “I’m sure our plenary panel will do a great job instigating and inviting discussions about this important topic.”
