The design inscriptions on the obverse (heads side) of the 2013 William McKinley $1 Coin are:

  • WILLIAM McKINLEY
  • IN GOD WE TRUST
  • 25th PRESIDENT
  • 1897-1901

William McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio in 1843. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years and two terms as governor of Ohio before becoming President in 1897. He served one full term and was re-elected in 1900. President McKinley was shot by an anarchist in September 1901, while attending the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition and died eight days later.

Please note: United States Mint coins are rolled by an automated machine process and not by hand; thus, we cannot guarantee that the obverse (heads side) or reverse (tails) of a coin will be at either end of a coin roll.

In 2005, President Bush signed the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 authorizing the United States Mint to strike $1 coins honoring America’s Presidents in the order in which they served. This coin, the 25th in the Presidential $1 Coin Program, honorsPresident William McKinley.
