In 1830, an albino sperm whale named Mocha Dick with several old harpoons in his body was killed off the coast of Chile. It seems that Mocha Dick had hundreds of encounters with whalers between 1810 and 1830. This is the origin of the white whale in Melville’s classic novel, and the whaling ship Pequod is featured along with Moby Dick on this 2013 Pequod Silver Dollar Proof. It’s part of the Ships That Never Sailed series, featuring famous ships from literature. The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II, along with the denomination and guarantee of the coin’s one ounce of 99.9% silver content.
