NON-FERROUS SCRAP
Market Drivers
- Industrial Demand and Manufacturing Activity – Growth in construction, automotive, electronics, and renewable energy sectors boosts demand for non-ferrous metals like aluminum, copper, and nickel. Strong industrial output directly translates into higher scrap consumption for secondary metal production.
Global Metal Prices and Exchange Trends – EFluctuations in base metal prices on global exchanges (like LME and COMEX) significantly influence scrap collection and trade. Rising primary metal prices generally encourage higher scrap recycling activity and export volumes.
- International Trade Policies and Logistics Costs – Export-import regulations, freight rates, and tariff barriers impact the global flow of scrap metals. Trade restrictions or logistical challenges can tighten regional supply and affect price dynamics for recyclers and smelters.

FERROUS SCRAP
Market Drivers
- Steel Production and Mill Demand — Ferrous scrap demand is closely tied to global steel production levels. Higher output from electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and integrated mills increases scrap consumption, particularly in regions like the U.S., EU, and India.
- Construction and Infrastructure Activity — Expansion in infrastructure, housing, and manufacturing projects drives steel usage, thereby boosting demand for scrap as a key raw material in rebar and structural steel production.
- Scrap Collection and Supply Chain Efficiency — Availability of quality scrap depends on effective collection networks, demolition activity, and recycling infrastructure. Improved scrap processing and sorting technologies enhance supply consistency.
- Export–Import Dynamics and Currency Fluctuations — Exchange rates, freight costs, and trade policies shape global scrap flow patterns. A weaker domestic currency often boosts scrap exports, while trade restrictions or higher freight rates can tighten supply and influence regional pricing.

Expert Quote:
“The US ferrous scrap market appears to be entering a holding pattern for November… The Outlook Trend Indicator has edged up to 52.3, indicating slight bullishness, though the increase is modest and suggests minimal pricing momentum.” — Fastmarkets.
Outlook
- Steady Ferrous Demand Recovery – Steel production is stabilizing in Asia and North America, supporting gradual recovery in ferrous scrap consumption. India and Southeast Asia are expected to drive demand growth as electric-arc-furnace (EAF) steelmaking expands.
- Soft Near-Term Ferrous Prices – Short-term ferrous scrap prices are expected to stay range-bound due to sluggish construction and infrastructure spending in China and Europe, with only modest seasonal gains forecast for Q1 2026.
- Positive Non-Ferrous Momentum – Non-ferrous metals such as aluminium and copper show stronger price prospects, buoyed by energy-transition industries (EVs, renewables) and rising use of recycled content in manufacturing.
- Supply Constraints to Support Premiums – Global scrap availability remains tight due to slower demolition activity and stricter export regulations in the EU and Asia, which could support higher premiums for clean, segregated scrap grades.
- Sustainability and Policy Tailwinds – Increasing circular-economy mandates and carbon-neutrality targets are boosting investment in scrap processing, with markets like India, the EU, and the U.S. expected to expand recycling capacity through 2030.
