Characteristics

D2 Flat Ground is an air-hardening, high carbon, high chromium tool steel with extremely high wear resisting properties. It is a very deep hardening steel and will be practically free from size change after proper treatment. The high percentage of chromium gives it mild corrosion resisting properties in the harden condition. D2 Flat Ground is ground to a surface finish of up to 35Ra on six sides and is free from defects and decarburization.

D2 is a high carbon - high chromium air hardening tool steel, heat treatable to 60-62 Rc. D2 offers excellent wear and abrasion resistance, due to large volumes of carbides in the microstructure. D2 is widely used in long production cold work applications requiring very high wear resistance and high compression strength. It is machinable in the annealed condition, and, like other air hardening tool steels, exhibits minimal distortion in heat treat. D2 is available in de-carb free rounds, flats, and squares, as well as ground flat stock and drill rod.

An air-hardening type steel known for its maximum wear resistance qualities. It is ideal for use in tools, dies, etc., used in long production runs. D-2 tool steel is a versatile high-carbon, high-chromium, air-hardening tool steel that is characterized by a relatively high attainable hardness and numerous, large, chromium rich alloy carbides in the microstructure. These carbides provide good resistance to wear from sliding contact with other metals and abrasive materials. Although other steels with improved toughness or improved wear resistance are available, D-2 provides an effective combination of wear resistance and toughness, tool performance, price, and a wide variety of product forms.
