SCA Announced Huge Investment in Munksund's Paper Mill

The investment delivers significant reduction in energy consumption at the paper mill.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): SCA announced fresh investment of SEK 150 million in new processing equipment at Munksund’s paper mill, Sweden, in a bid to reduce environmental impacts.

The investment comprises new equipment for treating black liquor, a key by-product of the chemical recycling process after pulp has been boiled. It is considered as a reinvestment, as the existing equipment is about to become obsolete. The latest technology will make the processes more efficient, while enabling to achieve sustainability benefits.

The investment delivers significant reduction in energy consumption at the paper mill. The energy consumption will be reduced by 1.4%, as it will use less energy for the evaporation process.

The investment will be made in two phases. The first phase is scheduled to start in autumn 2023, while the second phase will begin in autumn 2024.

According to Jens Riglert, Site Manager at Munksund’s paper mill, the company plans to boost the production of pine oil, used to produce biofuels. The investment will result in extraction of greater proportion of the soap contained in black liquor. The amount of soap extracted will increase by 24%. The investment demonstrates SCA’s commitment to most efficient use of resources, he added.
