MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): The Town of Plattsburgh, New York, is launching a weekly electronics recycling program with EWASTE+, expanding local access to responsible collection of unwanted computers, televisions, cellphones and other electronic devices.
The program begins Tuesday, September 1, at Plattsburgh Town Hall, 151 Banker Road. It is intended to give North Country residents a regular option for diverting eligible electronics from the waste stream.
Plattsburgh Adds Weekly Electronics Collection
Residents will be able to drop off a range of electronic products, including televisions, computers and laptops, cellphones and computer accessories.
Small electronic devices can be brought to Town Hall Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Larger electronics, including televisions and printers, are accepted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Drop-offs are by appointment.
Not all electronic or electrical products qualify for the program. Items identified as not accepted include household appliances, smoke detectors, air conditioners and e-cigarettes or vaping devices. Residents are advised to confirm whether an item is accepted before bringing it to Town Hall.
New York Law Supports E-Waste Collection
The Plattsburgh program operates within a broader New York system designed to keep covered electronic equipment out of conventional disposal channels.
Under New York State's Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act, manufacturers of covered electronic equipment are responsible for providing most consumers with free and convenient opportunities to recycle electronic waste. Collection options can include permanent sites, municipal facilities, manufacturer programs, mail-back services and collection events.
Covered equipment includes categories such as computers, televisions, monitors, printers and a range of computer peripherals. Acceptance rules can differ by collection location, making it important for users to confirm requirements before dropping off equipment.
Vermont E-Cycles Provides Regional Alternative
Across Lake Champlain, Vermont residents also have access to the state's E-Cycles program, which operates year-round through permanent collection locations across Vermont.
The program accepts covered devices including desktop and laptop computers, tablets, computer monitors, televisions, printers and computer peripherals.
Free recycling is available to Vermont households and residents, 501(c)(3) charities, school districts and small businesses with 10 or fewer employees. The program also allows free recycling for anyone dropping off seven or fewer covered electronic devices.
The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation maintains a statewide list of E-Cycles drop-off locations.
