AISI Welcomes USTR’s Efforts to Tackle Global Steel Excess Capacity at GFSEC 2025

Dempsey extended strong support to Ambassador Greer’s statement today before the ministerial meeting of the GFSEC.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) welcomed the remarks made by U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer at the Global Steel Forum on Steel Excess Capacity (GFSEC) ministerial meeting held on October 10, 2025, in South Africa. Chaired by Australia, the ministerial gathering took place alongside the G20 Trade and Investment Ministers meeting.

In a statement, Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO of AISI, emphasized that tackling massive global steel overcapacity remains one of the most pressing challenges for the American steel industry. He noted that excess capacity, particularly from China, continues to drive a surge in steel exports, causing significant harm to steel producers worldwide.

Dempsey expressed strong support for Ambassador Greer’s call, highlighting that current international trade rules are insufficient to address the global steel crisis. He reinforced the importance of collective action, urging other governments to join the U.S. in implementing measures to reduce excess capacity in the steel sector.

AISI also praised the GFSEC members for initiating discussions on a coordinated framework to tackle both the causes and effects of global steel overcapacity. The institute commended Ambassador Greer and the U.S. trade team for their leadership in advocating for fair and effective international trade practices.

This statement positions AISI and USTR as proactive voices in shaping a more balanced and sustainable global steel market, highlighting the critical need for international cooperation to protect the U.S. steel industry.
