Hyundai Steel Applies for Incentive Program Ahead of Donaldsonville Area Steel Mill

The Gonzales City Council initially discussed the possibility of leasing the city's civic center after Mayor Tim Riley's administration was approached.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hyundai Steel has applied for a Louisiana business tax incentive program ahead of the proposed $5.8 billion steel mill planned for the west bank of Ascension Parish near Donaldsonville, The Center Square reported.

Hyundai Steel Louisiana submitted two applications in late June tied to its proposed hydrogen-integrated steel mill, Nolan McKendry wrote in the article.

The company sought benefits through the state's Quality Jobs programs, which the state has offered to attract major economic projects, according to the report.

It was unclear at the time if the company applied for the Industrial Tax Exemption Program, per the article.

As reported in the past, Hyundai Steel could break ground as early as next year, as company officials have scouted the area for temporary office space.

The Gonzales City Council initially discussed the possibility of leasing the city's civic center after Mayor Tim Riley's administration was approached.

Chief of Staff Wade Petite told the council at the time that the company's representatives had asked for assistance with finding office space.

The company was said to be looking for around a 20,000-square-foot space that can be converted for two years until new offices can be built.

Following the Gonzales council meeting, Donaldsonville Mayor Leroy Sullivan told his city's council he had been in contact with Hyundai representatives, and they said the search would turn to the west side of the Mississippi River, closer to the proposed project.

Sullivan told the council that he delivered to the representatives a portfolio of vacant buildings.

State Rep. Ken Brass recently shared social media posts of Donaldsonville and parish officials meeting to discuss the development and the expansion of the housing market in the area.

In one post, Brass and Sullivan are shown meeting with real estate professionals to discuss the availability of housing and commercial properties.

The Hyundai Steel project, slated for the RiverPlex MegaPark industrial zone in the Modeste area, could be operational as early as 2029.

President Donald Trump, alongside Louisiana officials, announced the project March 24 at the White House.

The facility will produce steel for Hyundai, Kia and other automakers in the United States and is estimated to bring around 1,300 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs.
