AISI Applauded Trump’s Announcement to Double Steel Tariffs
The total Chinese steel exports are even more than the total North American steel production, Dempsey noted.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) applauded U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement to double existing tariffs on steel imports. In a statement released yesterday, Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO of the association welcomed Trump’s latest decision to raise steel tariffs from 25% to 50%.
According to him, the global steel overcapacity and production has continued to witness notable growth, led by China, despite the impacts on account of sharp downturn in the Chinese construction sector.

Consequently, the Chinese steel exports have hit a peak of 118 million metric tonnes in 2024, more than double when compared with 2020 levels. The total Chinese steel exports are even more than the total North American steel production, Dempsey noted.
In the midst of extremely challenging international conditions that continues to show no improvement, the tariff action will help in preventing further rise in steel imports into the country, thus protecting American steel producers and their workers from the harms caused by surging imports.
Dempsey applauded President’s bold action to increase the tariff on foreign steel and keep the domestic American steel industry strong.
During a rally at a steel plant, the U.S. President had announced his decision to double tariffs on steel imports, which will take effect on Wednesday. Later, he said that tariffs on imported aluminum will also be doubled.
