SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) unveiled annual statistics for the 2021 European paper and pulp industry. It credited multiple stakeholders across the industry for the region’s robust paper recycling rates. According to CEPI, the paper and paperboard recycling rate for the year was calculated at 71.4%. This was down from the rate of 73.3% in 2020. This is the third consecutive year that the region’s paper recycling rate has exceeded 70%. It must be noted that CEPI is part of the coalition that targets to achieve 76% recycling rate in the EU region.

The report noted that there exists strong demand for paper for recycling within the European region. This is evident from the fact that 50.7 million metric tons of the recovered fiber collected in Europe stayed in the CEPI trade region during the previous year. The year witnessed strong investments in paper recycling capacities across Europe, it said.

Jori Ringman, Director General, CEPI noted that the innovation and R&D in the sector has led to the use of recycled fibers in all key product categories. Recently, paper and board producers are seen exploring new markets with the increased use of paper as a substitute for various plastic products, he said.
