Norsk Hydro Broke Ground on Cassopolis Aluminum Recycling Plant

Several North American customers have already expressed interest in Hydro Circal, the company noted.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Global aluminium company, Norsk Hydro held a groundbreaking ceremony at Cassopolis, MI, thus marking the construction of its new state-of-the-art aluminium recycling plant. The new plant is expected to have an estimated production capacity of 120,000 metric tonnes of aluminium extrusion ingot per annum and will create approximately 70 jobs in the region.

Hilde Merete Aasheim, President and CEO, Hydro, who was present among others at the ceremony, said that the company plans to invest an estimated $150 million to complete the project. The ingots produced at the facility will be mainly used in automotive applications, other transportation uses, consumer and building system applications, he added.

The new Michigan plant will be the first large-scale producer of Hydro Circal- the branded ingot that comprises of at least 75% postconsumer scrap, in North America. The Cassopolis plant will be an example of sustainability and profitability going hand in hand. Several North American customers have already expressed interest in Hydro Circal, the company noted.

Alongside the groundbreaking ceremony, Hydro sponsored a tree planting with the Village of Cassopolis and Cassopolis Public Schools and presented the Cassopolis Public Schools with a donation to support their STEAM program. In addition, it provided the Village with new outdoor furniture manufactured from low-carbon recycled Hydro CIRCAL aluminium.
