ArcelorMittal Plant to Be World’s First Full-scale Zero Emissions Facility
The steelmaker looks forward to the support of the national and the Basque government in implementing the costly project.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Luxembourg-based integrated steelmaker ArcelorMittal announced that its Sestao plant in Spain is all set to become the world’s first full-scale zero carbon emissions steel plant. It expects the plant to produce 1.6 million tonnes of zero carbon-emissions steel by 2025.
The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the country’s government, which promises an investment of €1 billion towards construction of a 2.3 million tonne green hydrogen direct reduced iron (DRI) plant at its plant in Gijón, and a new hybrid electric arc furnace (EAF). Nearly one million tonne of DRI produced at the plant will be transported to Sestao, as feedstock for the EAFs.

In addition, the company will invest €50 million in Sestao, which will be used towards funding the implementation of key technologies required to enable the plant to deliver zero carbon-emissions.
The steelmaker looks forward to the support of the national and the Basque government in implementing the costly project. Also, it expects to gain access to a consortium of companies towards supply of green hydrogen.
Aditya Mittal, CEO, ArcelorMittal noted that the investment targets to take an existing steel plant to zero carbon-emissions within the next five years. ArcelorMittal commits to be the first company in the world to offer its customers meaningful volumes of zero carbon-emissions steel, he added.
