SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): U.S. steel mill shipments continued to show annual growth in August 2026, remaining significantly above the year-earlier figure, according to the latest data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Also, monthly volumes marginally exceeded July 2026 levels.
Domestic steel mills shipped 8.22 million net tons during August, compared with 8.219 million net tons in July. The month-on-month increase was negligible, indicating that shipment volumes remained broadly stable over the period.
However, shipments advanced 5.9%, rising from 7.76 million net tons in August last year. The year-over-year gain points to a stronger shipment position than that recorded during the corresponding month last year.
Cumulative shipments for the first eight months of 2026 reached 63.97 million net tons, representing a 5.4% jump from the 60.70 million net tons recorded during January–August 2025.
According to AISI data, corrosion-resistant sheet and strip registered the strongest growth among segments, with year-to-date shipments climbing 11% from the comparable period in 2025. Hot-rolled sheet and strip shipments increased 9%, while cold-rolled sheet recorded a marginal improvement of 0.1%.
The latest figures indicate that overall U.S. steel shipments have maintained positive annual momentum through August, although monthly volumes showed virtually no change from July.
