COFI hails new federal measures to help softwood lumber industry

The commitments announced by Prime Minister Carney reflect an important recognition of the role forestry and forest products play in the economic strength of Canada.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Kim Haakstad, President & CEO of the BC Council of Forest Industries (COFI) issued the following statement in response to today’s announcement on new federal support for the lumber industry:

“We welcome today’s announcement of new federal measures to support Canada’s lumber sector as companies continue to navigate escalating U.S. duties, trade uncertainty and competitiveness challenges in international markets. The commitments announced by Prime Minister Carney reflect an important recognition of the role forestry and forest products play in the economic strength of Canada.”

“The effectiveness of today’s measures will depend on how quickly and efficiently support reaches operators on the ground. The announcement of a one-stop shop to help companies navigate federal programs is a welcome move and something COFI requested. While application processes are open, companies are still waiting too long for decisions. As we approach year-end, businesses need clarity to plan for next year. Timely rollout and clear timelines will be essential to helping workers, communities, and manufacturers manage near-term challenges.”

“While these measures are positive, the long-term solution remains a durable, negotiated softwood lumber agreement that gives workers and companies the confidence and clarity they need to invest, compete, and plan for the future.”

“As Ottawa advances these programs, we are pleased to hear the Prime Minister’s strong focus on addressing what we can control. It is also important for the Province of British Columbia to continue taking action at home to improve competitiveness through predictable and economic access to logs for mills, and to ensure B.C. remains a Canadian and global leader in lumber and forest products.”
