Protestors spotlight plastic pollution during industry convention in Cleveland

The protest highlighted the dangers of microplastics in the environment, including when they are ingested and inhaled by humans.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Protestors often use creative methods to draw attention to a cause, and the folks opposed to runaway plastic production are squarely in that group.

The People Over Petro Coalition, which blames petrochemical companies for putting profits over public health when it comes to creating plastics, came to Cleveland last week to demonstrate during the AMI Plastics World Expos.

A rally held along the Cuyahoga River featured a “monster” made of plastic scrap pulled from the river by a group called “Trash Fish” that patrols the river in kayaks.

The protest highlighted the dangers of microplastics in the environment, including when they are ingested and inhaled by humans. Activists also railed against plastic recycling, which they claim is not effective and only provides the industry with cover as it continues to make even more plastic.

Industry supporters acknowledged concerns with plastic, but said it has become essential to people’s lives and that cutting back on the use of plastic would require society to go without some of the conveniences it has come to enjoy.
