Crews said they are working on a defensive strategy to manage the fire with Buncombe County officials.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): People were asked to avoid roads in Asheville after a fire was reported at a scrap yard on Wednesday.
Firefighters with the Asheville Fire Department (AFD) said they arrived at a scrap yard behind Mountain Metal Recycling just before 2 p.m. for a fully involved fire.
Crews said they are working on a defensive strategy to manage the fire with Buncombe County officials.
Pond Road was closed at Brevard Road and McIntosh Road, firefighters added. Smoke could possibly be seen from Interstate 26.
As of 4:16 p.m., the fire is controlled and are working to put out hot spots. By 5:10 p.m., crews had cleared the area.
Officials said hazmat teams responded to the area to monitor the air and evaluating water runoff.
