SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Town of Harrietstown recycled more than 7,465 pounds of electronic waste at its July 11 e-waste recycling event - at absolutely no cost to taxpayers.
“A diligent group of volunteers spent a Saturday helping move old televisions, computers, printers, and more,” said Town Councilman David Lynch. “The town is proud that nearly 7,500 pounds of waste is being recycled rather than winding up in a landfill, and that we were able to offer this service for free.”
New York State requires consumers to recycle many electronic items - including computers, televisions, and other small electronic equipment - in an environmentally responsible way. The state’s Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act also requires manufacturers to provide free and convenient recycling of electronic waste to most consumers in the state.
The town partnered with EWASTE+, a New York recycling company with facilities in Rochester, Albany, and New York City.
“EWASTE+ provided us with twelve pallets and Gaylord boxes. We filled them all,” said Lynch. “Their team was great to work with, and the town has had some preliminary discussions about doing more events like this in the future.”
