SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Solidarity Union claims that ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) intends to fire around 4,000 employees. Since the business intends to expand the layoffs to its Vanderbijlpark factories, the expected job losses have increased dramatically from the original projections.

AMSA had earlier opted to close its long steel factories in Newcastle and Vereeniging due to the impasse in negotiations with the country's government, which resulted in the loss of about 3,500 jobs.

ArcelorMittal South Africa in Talks to Avert Factory Closure

It should be mentioned that AMSA has twice postponed its plan to shut down its lengthy steel operations, which have been under pressure due to low local demand, rising electricity costs, growing competition from nearby recycling mills, and an increase in imports from China.

AMSA has long advocated for the nation's government to levy taxes on scrap imports and reduce scrap export duties. Additionally, it has been pressuring state utilities to offer favourable power pricing.

The corporation has already told workers that it is preparing for mass layoffs that will affect almost 4,000 positions, the union explained. Additionally, it stated that the layoffs have now been extended to its main flat steel plant in Vanderbijlpark.
