Vietnam completes aluminum value chain with first aluminum ingots

After more than 11 years of development, the plant successfully produced aluminum ingots with a purity of 99.71%, completing the final stage of Vietnam's aluminum production process.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Vietnam has completed its domestic aluminum value chain with the production of its first aluminum ingots, a milestone expected to strengthen industrial self-reliance, increase value-added manufacturing and deepen the country's integration into global materials supply chains.
The country officially unveiled its first domestically produced aluminum ingots on July 26 at the Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant in Nhan Co Industrial Park, Lam Dong province, marking the country's first fully integrated bauxite-alumina-aluminum production chain.
After more than 11 years of development, the plant successfully produced aluminum ingots with a purity of 99.71%, completing the final stage of Vietnam's aluminum production process.
Until now, Vietnam had primarily exported bauxite and alumina while relying heavily on imported aluminum metal for downstream manufacturing.
The successful production of aluminum ingots enables Vietnam to move beyond raw-material processing toward higher-value industrial manufacturing.
Aluminum is a strategic material used across industries including power transmission, mechanical engineering, automobiles, railways, aerospace, defense, construction and high-tech manufacturing.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang attended the ceremony, describing the achievement as a historic milestone for Vietnam's metallurgical industry.
The project demonstrates Vietnam's growing ability to master advanced industrial technologies, improve production management and develop a skilled workforce, he said.
He noted that the achievement aligns with the Party and State's strategy of promoting deep mineral processing and increasing the added value of domestic natural resources.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister cum Defence Minister, completing the aluminum value chain will help Vietnam reduce dependence on imported industrial materials and create new opportunities to participate more deeply in global manufacturing supply chains.
He also called on ministries and local authorities to continue improving policies for the aluminum industry, while encouraging further investment in transportation infrastructure, energy systems, logistics and downstream aluminum processing.
For enterprises, he stressed the importance of operating facilities safely, complying with environmental standards and moving toward smart, green manufacturing aligned with international benchmarks.
Lam Dong Party Secretary Y Thanh Ha Nie Kdam said the province would continue supporting the project by improving infrastructure, expanding logistics capacity and developing high-quality human resources.
The province also plans to attract investment in downstream aluminum processing, supporting industries and advanced manufacturing to build a modern aluminum industrial ecosystem.
The first phase of the Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant has an annual production capacity of 150,000 tonnes, which is expected to increase to 300,000 tonnes by the end of this year before reaching its designed capacity of 450,000 tonnes in the first quarter of 2027.
Once all three development phases are operational, the project is expected to generate annual industrial output worth approximately VND35-36 trillion (US$1.22 – 1.37 billion), create around 3,500 direct and indirect jobs, and reduce Vietnam's aluminum import bill by an estimated US$1.5 billion per year.
Vietnam possesses one of the world's largest bauxite reserves, most of which are concentrated in the Central Highlands. However, for many years the country's aluminum industry was largely limited to bauxite mining and alumina production, while aluminum metal, an essential input for manufacturing industries, continued to be imported in significant volumes.
The production of Vietnam's first domestically made aluminum ingots therefore marks a major industrial milestone, completing the country's bauxite-alumina-aluminum value chain for the first time. The achievement is projected to enhance the value of Vietnam's mineral resources, strengthen industrial self-reliance and support the long-term development of a modern, sustainable aluminum industry.
